Sadly this “war on Christmas” bs that was begun and propagated by Bill O’Reilly on Faux News seems to have seeped more and more in the beliefs of many mainstream Americans. The reality is there is no one that is out to destroy Christmas or take Christ out of it. The Grinch is a character in my favorite Christmas cartoon but he doesn’t exist.

So what do they love to use as evidence. Some say the word Christmas can’t be used in schools. Seriously? If you have ever been in a school public or private this time of year, you know that just isn’t true. Most years I attend a Christmas party that usually has a High School Choral for entertainment. Yes a public school. They sing Christmas songs, yes some about Santa Claus and Snow and Chestnuts but some about silent nights and angels singing as well.

The next one is the use of the greetings Happy Holidays or Seasons Greetings. I was raised Catholic, I still have Christian beliefs, and yes I know what Christmas is about and remember it as such. Most times I do wish people a Merry Christmas. But I am not arrogant enough to believe that all should believe as I do. So I do wish some Happy Holidays and some Happy Hanukah when I know they are of Jewish faith. That doesn’t mean I am trying to take Christ out of Christmas anymore then wishing Canadians Happy Thanksgiving in October means I think the 4th week in November isn’t a better time for it.

Yes I have found it annoying that a few that don’t respect our beliefs have used the courts to limit nativity scenes on government property. But you know what, this has been going on for decades and those displays have just moved down the street in just about every town in America. Christ wasn’t taken out of Christmas anywhere.

My point is, my faith is strong enough to know that no man or men or organization or company have any chance of taking God or Jesus out of anything successfully especially Christmas. When I see Happy Holidays or Seasons Greetings, I take those words to mean most likely how they are intended, polite well wishes to everyone, not just those who believe one way.
1. The auto bailout- 2 million jobs and the economy of at least 8 states have been improved dramatically by this one action of the President. Romney will regret the headline “let the Detroit go bankrupt” for the rest of his life. Even though he is trying to distort his record on this at the last minute, the headline and the video of him confirming this stance is haunting him.

2. Are we better off then 4 years ago- To most Americans the answer is clearly yes. If you have investments, wall street has doubled. If you are on Medicare the prescription loop hole closing is saving you money. Though too many are still unemployed, people are forgetting the millions that now have jobs that either they didn’t have or were at risk of losing 4 years ago.

3. Casual Voters-The vast majority of American voters are not as plugged into the day to day world of politics. Though it is often easy for misinformation and changing ones positions to work, Romney has done it at such a pace that even the most casual have seen it and recognized it for what it is. A man who will say anything and believes apparently nothing.

4. The country is evolving- Attitudes are changing. The vast majority of young people do not have the same beliefs on race, and homosexuality that even their parents had. Hate, fear and division not only doesn’t work with casual voters it causes a backlash.

5. Women- Too many Republicans have sad out loud what they really think of women. The fact that Romney hasn’t distanced himself from the comments of Aiken and Murdock that it will be very hard for most women to pull that level for any Republican.

6. Voter Suppression-This is perhaps the biggest backfire in the history of Presidential politics. 4 years ago there was “history” there was “change” there was major excitement and motivation that helped Barack Obama get elected. There was genuine concern that would not be there at the same levels this time. Then came voter suppression efforts and people began to believe someone was taking away their vote. This caused the biggest change in mobilization and motivation perhaps in history. The lines at the early voting venues have been unbelievable. By trying to stop these people from voting the Republican party instead increased the numbers likely to vote by a significant margin.

7. Likeability- The sleaziness and the dishonesty of the Romney campaign has not gone unnoticed. It makes many voters ill just to see his face. Compare that to President Obama and people genuinely can’t help but to like the man personally even if they don’t always agree with him.

The polls have been consistent in one thing. President Obama will win this election. Yes there has been a blip here or there but never has Romney been in the lead in the Electoral college. Romney’s side of course isn’t going to say that, they need to keep their base motivated to vote, The Obama campaign doesn’t want to say that because they don’t want their voters not showing up because it’s a done deal. The media surely won’t say that because they want you to keep watching the news and they want the advertising revenue. Of course it’s important to still vote. But there will be no surprise on election day. President Obama will get 4 more years.

Joe Rhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03601255278609648428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32231753.post-17726256527388320612012-10-21T13:03:00.000-04:002012-10-21T13:05:48.467-04:00Honesty Matters
I am frankly disgusted by dishonesty. We don’t put up with it from our friends, our families, or coworkers or anyone else in our lives yet when it comes to politics Americans repeatedly ignore dishonesty.

There are so many excuses for this none of which are valid. The most often one is “all politicians lie.” Do they, in actuality? They all put their own spin on things, they put their record in the best light possible. But to outright lie is completely different and has much worse consequences. For example on a resume most of us have tried to find the right words to make our experiences and abilities sound as good as possible, but if we cross the line and make up job experience and knowledge, the chances of disaster should we get that job are quite high. When we ignore the lies of politicians vote for them anyway, we are rewarding them for doing so thus encouraging others to do so in the future.

Another excuse is “people don’t want to know the truth, they want to hear what they want to hear.” This is often used as a reason for the existence of Fox News. Clearly this organizations ratings are too high to believe that everyone that watches it is stupid enough to believe it is actually “fair and balanced” Hundreds if not thousands of times Fox News has been caught blatantly reporting falsehoods, yet people still watch it, every day excusing them for the lies they have reported. Not wanting to believe the truth. This rewards Fox News for acting as they do.

This nation reelected a President who either by his own fault or the fault of those around him told the country and the world we must go into a war because of weapons of mass destruction. The vast majority of the country knew by the time of his reelection that wasn’t true. But they ignored it they didn’t want to know. The consequences, over 4000 American service men and women killed. 10’s of thousands wounded. Lack of trust by basically the entire world including our allies. Yet we ignore these consequences because “we didn’t want to know?”

Now we come to this election. We have a man Mitt Romney that has been documented by every independent fact checking organization to be out right lying again and again. He was once pro choice, he is now pro life, he has spoken again and again of a 20% tax cut across the board which is 5 trillion, yet in a debate he stood their with a straight face and repeated he proposed no such tax cut. He claims he worked across the aisle as a Republican Governor with a democratic legislature when the reality is he vetoed that Legislature 800 times and was overridden 800 times. He claims he is against Obama Care when in fact he passed about almost the exact same legislation as Governor. He claims he is pro coal when he stood in front of a coal plant bragging that he shut it down.

You can say all you want about President Obama, you can be disappointed in the speed of the recovery, you can even disagree with some of his policies, but what no one with an eye for the truth can say, is that he has ever been dishonest with the American people and the world in any way. He has stood by his convictions and his beliefs.

You cannot say that about Mitt Romney.

Vote for Mitt Romney if you choose to, but know this, because of his dishonesty frankly you a voting based on “wanting to believe” rather then any actual facts on how he stands on any issue. Because what he says changes depending on what he feels he needs to say to win that day, that week.

Our nation survived 8 years of a dishonest Administration at great cost. Do you really want to take that risk again?

Joe Rhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03601255278609648428noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32231753.post-46569191070978593582012-10-17T16:36:00.003-04:002012-10-17T16:36:34.417-04:00Making political hay out of tragedy.
Did Democrats use 9/11 against Bush?

Did Democrats attack Reagan for the 200 Marines killed in Lebanon?

The answer is of course a resounding No!

But Republicans are not like Democrats they will use any tragedy and twist it to criticize, accuse, and try to make political gain.

FACT: What happened in Benghazi is a tragedy. Fact: 4 Americans were killed. Fact: It happened on a very confusing day where demonstrations were taking place all over the world over a video. Fact: The President did call it a Terrorist attack the next day. Fact: Unlike wannabe Presidents the actual Commander in Chief has to base decisions and take action based on the facts, not emotion, not what is politically easier or what sounds good.

Fact: This President has a record that is unmatched by ANY President when it comes to bringing terrorists to justice. This President has in fact sought out, captured and or killed more Terrorist leaders in 3 years than any other President did in 8.

Fact: the world trusts America again under President Obama’s leadership. Fact: While other Presidents pounded their chest and threatened, with no results. Dictatorships decades old have fallen under this President’s watch.

Fact: People cheer this President and America in places they used to burn our flag.

Fact: President Obama ended a war that the world was lied to by President Bush to start.

Fact: President Obama is ending the longest war in our History.

Fact: This man is truly the leader of the Free World. Others are bad arm chair coaches.

Republicans should start acting like Americans again and stand by our President to help bring the culprits to justice instead of your sniveling over how and when the word “terrorist” was used.

Joe Rhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03601255278609648428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32231753.post-8190963886724745682012-09-18T16:51:00.001-04:002012-09-18T16:53:31.525-04:00Romney: A truly despicable human beingThe video that hopefully most Americans have seen by now truly show the kind of man Mitt Romney is. Born into privilege, made wealthy stepping on the backs of working Americans and then showing total disdain for those not as fortunate as him.

There were many people he called irresponsible freeloaders in that video. Not just the many elderly who survive on Social Security Checks and Medicare, not just the poor. not just the disabled, not just the millions of Americans who got a college education with government grants and loans. How about the those that have ever found themselves unemployed, found their health insurance doesn't cover their bills, through no fault of their own. How about the thousands of business men who get SBA loans every year to start or keep their businesses a float. The banks that got a bail out, the auto industry that exists still today due to Government money, The veterans who depend on the government for health care, the victims of flood, hurricane, fire and other disasters. The farmers devastated by drought.

But there is a group of people that find Mitt Romney's words the most despicable of all. These are the thousands of people that had good jobs, security, health benefits, pensions and did everything they were supposed to do. Their only mistake that put them on Romney's dead beat list? They worked for a company that was bought by Mitt Romney and Bain Capital. Mitt made millions while these people lost everything, pensions, health care, their very jobs. Mitt personally was responsible for putting these people on various forms of government assistance. Yet he calls them irresponsible?

Yes I am repeating the same word 3 times in one post, but I can't think of a better one. DespicableJoe Rhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03601255278609648428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32231753.post-1891990848658298392012-09-13T10:42:00.000-04:002012-09-13T10:47:09.992-04:00The Hypocrisy on Foreign Policy of Romney and the Right.
Are Americans really listening to what Romney and the right wing talking heads have been saying the last couple days? First off they like to use the words “apology and appeasement.” Both things that President Obama has never done. Not now not ever. The statement sent out by the American Embassy in Egypt before the violence escalated was as follows:

“The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims — as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others.”

Where exactly is the apology? What exactly in that statement is as Romney says, “against American Values?” Is it not an American value to oppose religious intolerance, is it weak to state a belief that our very nation was founded on? What if this was about an anti Christian or anti Semitic movie, would this be considered a bad statement by the Republican’s then or is it only weak because it is aimed at Islam?

No one, not the President, not the State Department not even the majority of the Libyan people are stating it is ok to respond with violence to this trash. All have expressed such unequivocally. It is just as wrong as people bombing abortion clinics killing innocent people in the name of God.

A foreign policy of apology and appeasement they say. What they really mean is that this President actually tries to use diplomacy, understanding, communication and finding common ground when dealing with other nations. This includes all nations not just Israel. This as opposed to a chest thumping President who used cowboy diplomacy that resulted in two wars, the worst terrorist attack on our nation, and two nations he called the “Axis of Evil” deciding to protect themselves by developing Nuclear Weapons.

In addition I have been actually hearing Right Wing mouthpieces question the wisdom of supporting the ouster of the Dictator Mubarak resulting in Egypt moving toward democracy. Isn’t it the Republicans favorite justification for intervention in other countries to spread democracy? Democracy is messy, because the people choose who will run their country. It is in fact way easier to control a dictator. Yet it is and has always been our nation’s mission to promote democracy and the will of the people anywhere in the world. They criticize the ouster of Mubarak not because they have a democracy now that is less easy to predict their future, they criticize it because it happened during President Obama’s time in office.

Thank goodness a democracy wasn’t created that a terrorist group was voted into power, oh wait that did happen in Lebanon where Hamas took power in democratic elections. But that happened during Bush’s Presidency so that’s ok apparently.

The facts are this, America is exceptional, America is strong, America is the best hope for peace and Democracy around the world. But we must have leaders of vision, that other countries trust, and that are effective.

During this President’s time in Office, One war was brought to an end, another will end soon. More terrorists have been killed or captured in the last 3 years then the entire 8 years of the Bush Administration including Bin Laden himself. Our country has not been attacked by foreign terrorists on our soil, not even once. Long time dictators have fallen in several countries and others are on the brink. Our current President is cheered when he makes trips to other nations when the last President had to be snuck in, in the middle of the night.

Weak? Appeasing? Clearly not. The right word would be effective.

Joe Rhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03601255278609648428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32231753.post-7687282492084397862012-08-24T12:31:00.002-04:002012-08-24T12:48:06.953-04:00Why I Care About Politics.
Often I hear things like, “I don’t follow politics”….”I ignore all the political posts”,.. “all politicians are the same” “It doesn’t matter” … In short “I don’t care. “

But I do care.

I care because I love my country. The country that exists now, the country as it was in the past and the country that will exist in the future.

I care because I believe in truth, honesty, commitment and leadership.

I care because I cannot stand by while others lie, distort and just make things up for political gain.

I care because I listen to the words of Jesus Christ, "'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'"

I care because I believe our country is greatest when its not controlled by greed.

I care because I believe the richest country on earth should have equal opportunity for all.

I care because in that wealthiest of countries I believe that health care is in fact a right rather then a method to enrich people while others choose between food and medicine.

I care because I have seen what happens when all the wealth goes to the few and 99% are left out.

I care because I have seen a war based on lies told by a President and his administration, leading to the deaths of over 4000 young American Men and women and 10’s of thousands of Iraqi’s

I care because I have seen that cowboy diplomacy of the past leads to our country being less safe, building up more hate and mistrust around the world.

I care because I have seen the world celebrate strong leadership by American Presidents such as FDR, JFK and yes Barack Obama. That leads to a better world not only for American’s but the world.

I care because I don’t think our elections should be up for sale to the highest corporate bidder who can spend millions in secret spreading lies and mistruths and we allow them to do so.

I care because I don’t think our elected leaders should do things to prevent citizens from voting thus helping one side win.

I care because ignorance, hate and racisim must not prevail.

I care because I believe in the United States of America, Liberty and Justice for all and the Constitution.

So yes I am passionate. Yes I will annoy people with my frequent posts. No I do not believe that masses will suddenly wake up and change their vote. But if one person understands the facts that they didn’t before, If one person votes that wouldn’t have before, if one person even takes the time to listen and find the facts rather then ignoring all sides, then it has all been worth it to me.
It's hard to say since he has taken just about every side on just about every issue depending on what he thought benefited him at the time.

There is only one thing consistent about Mitt Romney and that is finding a way to pad his own pockets no matter how many lies he needs to tell, people he needs to step on, livelihoods he has to destroy.. This is the kind of man that should lead our country?

So many are supporting him because he is pro-life. Is he now?

There is only one thing Mitt has been consistant on over the years and that is padding his own pockets.

Who does he represent? Not you. Joe Rhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03601255278609648428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32231753.post-11175919347014716152012-08-16T21:36:00.001-04:002012-08-16T21:37:34.638-04:00Romney:We did everything required by lawMitt just doesn't get it. No one is saying he did anything illegal. We know for example the following:

Releasing only 2 years of tax returns is legal.

Him paying less then 15% in taxes when most Americans pay over 30% is legal.

Hiding funds in Cayman islands and Swiss Bank accounts is legal.

Billionaire oil barons dumping millions into campaign ads for him, legal.

Changing laws to make it easier for Republicans to vote and harder for Democrats. legal. (for now)

Taking over companies closing them, tossing workers on the unemployment line and him getting rich in the process ..legal.

Not only are all these things legal but he feels he is entitled to them.

Most Americans are sick and tired of the deck being stacked against them, in favor of people like Mitt Romney. They are tired of politicians like him who want to stack the deck even more.

He wants to give more tax breaks to the top 1%. He wants to take away the few regulations that the RepubLIEcan congress allowed through to prevent the banks from gambling with Americans savings, mortgages and retirement. He wants to reduce regulations on business that provide safety, clean air, water to the rest of us. All because he and his rich cronies are entitled?

And his running mate Ryan, he is worse. He wants to take away funding for students, the poor, the disabled. the elderly to give more tax breaks to the entitled rich.

It is clear who these men represent and its not you or me. Joe Rhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03601255278609648428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32231753.post-72794582250747848322012-08-15T15:26:00.001-04:002012-08-15T15:28:11.768-04:00Romney Playing Victim Now?
Aww poor Mitt. Having unlimited funds from Karl Rove and the Koch Brothers running smear ads based on no fact whatsoever apparently isn’t enough. The RNC running a “welfare” ad that has been called blatantly false by every independent fact check organization there is, not enough. Romney himself running ad after ad not one yet that doesn’t have at least one glaring lie and they all end with the words “I am Mitt Romney and I approved this message,” not enough.

Now he wants to be poor Mitt. The President is desperate he says, he is being mean, whine on Mitt whine on. After all the lies, the distortions, the veiled racist attacks and the complete disrespect shown to the President of the United States by Republicans, Tea Parties and the supporters of Romney. Along with the Birthers, those questioning the Presidents religion and more. Has the President ever once whined, or complained or given even seemed to give any attention to these attacks?

Romney I have news for you, the President of the United States Barack Obama is a man of principle he stands by his beliefs and he recognizes the morals of his convictions. He doesn’t have to whine when he is attacked no matter how false the attacks are.

Yes Romney cry all you want that Vice President Biden used the word chains instead of the word shackles your man used. The more you do, the more it shows the American People who the desperate one really is.

Joe Rhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03601255278609648428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32231753.post-15342020809054193262012-08-14T18:14:00.001-04:002012-08-14T18:14:55.552-04:00The Romney-Ryan Lie of the Day
“Obamacare took 700 billion out of Medicare” This lie is being told by basically every RepubLIEcan that gets near a microphone this week. It is featured in a new Romney add that he approved.

Here are the facts. The 700 billion was actually a subsidy to big insurance companies. This program did not work and was being spent by big insurance to pad their stock prices and CEO’s massive salaries. Remember the primary goal of big insurance is not to provide health care but to maximize their profits. This cut did not take one dime from Medicare recipients . In fact the Obama health plan saves Seniors money. Already they are benefiting from lower costs in prescriptions.

Contrast this with Ryan Budget which takes most of the Medicare money and gives it to the profit hungry insurance companies the rest goes for a tax cut to the rich. In addition the Congressional budget office has calculated that the Ryan plan will cost seniors over $6000 more per year for the same coverage they have now.

Once again RepubLIEcans lie, because when they debate the facts, they lose.

They are requiring them to obtain government issued identification which many don’t have. To obtain that identification they must obtain legal papers at their expense and sometimes traveling significant distances. In some cases those papers cannot be obtained in time to register to vote.
They have passed laws making it harder to register to vote. Limiting the places you can go do so.
They have passed laws to limit early voting in many places. In one part of this country they have allowed extended voting hours in areas that traditionally vote for one party and have a low percentage of minorities while limiting voting hours in areas that lean toward the other party or have significant minorities. The chief voting official in one territory of this country, has personally voted for early voting in areas leaning to his party and against in the other areas.
They claim they are trying to fight voter fraud with these measures taking away the votes of 10’s of thousands. But here is the thing, there have been less then 1 case of voter fraud per state in last 10 years and very few of those would be prevented by any of these new measures.
Their real motivation behind these laws is clear it is to cheat, rig, manipulate the voting to ensure their own political party wins. The only fraud is the fraud this party is pulling on the citizens of their country.
What country does this sound like? The Soviet Union? China? North Korea?
The sad reality this is happening in the United States of America. It is being done in Ohio and other states. Done by Republicans who wrap themselves in the flag and claim they stand for the constitution when in fact they are trying to purposely destroy our democracy as we know it.
What is even sadder is today this is all happening on the 40th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. How different things were then.

His choice of Paul Ryan, the author of the "Ryan Budget" is absolute confirmation of this.
The choice we have is a man, President Obama who has fought the RepubLIEcans every step of the way to get affordable health care for all, invest in the middle class, saving jobs like the auto industry, and making a college education affordable for all versus Romney/Ryan that want to take away health care from the segment of the population that has health care now, make college more unaffordable, and cut jobs in infrastructure spending all to pay for tax cuts for the rich.
If you know your history things like Medicare, education and investing in infrastructure is how FDR got this country out of the depression. Ryan and Romeny want to do the oppisite.
This video makes it clear even for those with the IQ of the typical FAUX News watchers.

Apparently he, his campaign and his pacs are not capable of actually discussing issues without lieing.
The latest is the welfare reform commercial. This ad claims that President Obama changed the rules to eliminate the work requirment for welfare. The actual truth is the Federal Government at the request of Republican Governors gave more power to the states on how to distrubute welfare.
More power to the states? Yes Republicans you would think would be all for that, but no. But wait, which republican governors actually signed a letter asking for this? Ones like Huckabee, Jindal, Pawlenty. Barbour, Perry and more.
Here is the most hipocritical aspect of all this. When welfare reform was first enacted another Republican Govenor wrote then President Bill Clinton asking for this very same thing. His name: Mitt Romney.
The next time you see a Romney add with statements in it that your gut tells you are not true, listen to the words carefully at the end. "I am Mitt Romney and I approved this message." Then hold him accountable.
Why can't repubLIEcans stay with facts? Because with the truth, they will lose.Joe Rhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03601255278609648428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32231753.post-4755904175418003612012-07-27T22:59:00.000-04:002012-07-27T22:59:25.596-04:00Remember When? For 8 years we shook our heads in embrassment as the President of our nation had to be snuck in to meetings in other countries in the middle of the night, had shoes thrown at him, was the butt of jokes and and demonstrations would wide against his policies not just in countries that were enemies but in western europe as well.
Those were the 8 years of George W Bush.

There is no Ocean front. No mighty rivers like the Hudson or the Mississippi, though smaller scenic ones we have. The weather there isn’t the best nor the worst. But the thing Columbus has that no city in the world can beat, is the pride of its citizens.

Nothing pleases a Columbusite more then to show off his City. Years ago when a business visitor pointed toward the skyline and asked, is that Cincinnati or Cleveland over there? I grinned with pride and said, that is the downtown of Columbus, Ohio’s largest city.

Visitors to Columbus sometimes chuckle at the little tours locals invariably give them, showing them downtown, campus, the short north, german village, and don’t forget the Santa Maria, and we miss showing them the first Wendy’s.

Have you ever heard a local talk about the city of firsts? The first branch bank, first drive thru, first supermarket among a long list of them. How about the fast food capital, home of Wendy’s, White Castle, US headquarters of Tim Horton’s, and so many that have come and gone. (Remember the home of the whirling satellite?)

Whatever you do don’t get us started on the Corporate Headquarters based in our city. We will brag loudly about Volkswagen of America, The Limited, Aberchrombie and Fitch, Bob Evans, Nationwide Insurance, and AEP among so many others.

You know what is fun is taking a frequent shopper to one of our malls. They may not be the biggest but boy do we have everything. I recall showing a visitor Easton once. Just as we drove down the little European like street in front of the theater, she exclaimed, “now this is a mall”

Yes those from other places may mock our pride sometimes. They will never understand the awe some of us felt when we walked into the newly restored Palace Theater in 1980, the euphoria that waved over us when Buster Douglas upset Mike Tyson, the joy we felt when we walked into Nationwide Arena the first time and heard, “Welcome to the NHL, Columbus,” the broad smiles on our faces seeing Jack Hanna representing our Zoo so well on Letterman, or the tears that well up in our eyes simply seeing two lines of drummers silently lead a band out onto the field.

They may chuckle all they want, we will not change. Our pride is real, it is deep and it is never ending. Yes we love our City and we proudly shout out:

HAPPY 200TH COLUMBUS!!Joe Rhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03601255278609648428noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32231753.post-78993566409802007122012-02-09T08:41:00.004-05:002012-02-09T08:50:07.419-05:00Religious Freedom or HypocrisyTwo weeks ago the Catholic Bishops had a letter from them read at pulpits all over the country. It has caused a firestorm that in their desperation the Republicans have jumped all over. But what is this about, is it about morality, or religious freedom?

First of all let’s start with the facts. This is about a ruling by the Federal Health and Human Services department made that requires all employers to provide birth control services in health insurance programs. Yes, that is right, birth control, not abortion. In fact abortion is not mentioned or part of this rule in any way whatsoever. Anyone that says otherwise is misinformed or a flat out liar.

Unbelievable that in 2012 there is still a fight over birth control. But who is actually fighting? It sure isn’t the women of America since 99% of them have used or are using contraception now. In fact it isn’t even Catholic women because 98% of them do.

So they want you to ignore those facts and make this simply about religious freedom. But again is it? The Health and Human Service’s ruling exempts employees of actual churches. This ruling in fact has no affect on anyone in our around, or attending, or even employed by an actual church. So yes the church can decide not to cover birth control for the organist and the pastor’s secretary.

So who does it apply to? This effects the thousands of employees regardless of their religion of Catholic run institutions like universities and hospitals. These institutions are not churches, they are large organizations and are very large employers.

Some would say that the Catholic Church has the right to impose their beliefs on these institutions despite the fact they are not churches. Really now? The Catholic Church is also against divorce, perhaps they also have the right to fire anyone at these institutions that gets a divorce or even worse, turn someone away at an emergency room at their hospital because the patient is divorced? Of course not.

So how is this hypocrisy? First of all 22 states already have this requirement. Did the Catholic Church scream out then? But get this. A number of Catholic run institutions already provide insurance for birth control.

So what is this about? Frankly I am clueless. Being raised a Catholic myself and being taught in the vision of Jesus Christ to work for the poor, the needy, the helpless, the widowed, the elderly, the orphaned and the hungry is one of the reasons I am a liberal. For the Catholic Bishops to ignore all the things this administration has done in those areas, over a fight over a moral judgment that few Catholics even hold is truly baffling. All they have done is to insert themselves in typical RepubLIEcan hypocrisy for political gain. And boy are the RepubLIEcans enjoying using the Catholic Bishops for their ends.

What would be the result if the HHS reverses this policy? Will it stop female employees of Catholic Hospitals and Colleges from having sex unless they want children? Of course it won’t. It will instead result in those that can’t afford it to go without birth control, resulting in more unwanted pregnancies and worst of all more abortions. Hypocrisy? You bet it is.Joe Rhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03601255278609648428noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32231753.post-27232602591231560972011-02-23T05:17:00.005-05:002011-02-23T05:41:57.197-05:00Who will they attack nextThe corporate right wing attack machine has systematically been going after Americans group by group, blaming them, vilifying them, and marginalizing them. First it was the poor. They used doctored video tapes to attack an organization that worked to help the poor get control of their finances, to gain homes, to register to vote. But few listened to the facts of innocence, and few showed concern because after all they are poor they must be deadbeats correct?

Then there is the constant attack on immigrants. Making claims of them getting benefits and welfare and somehow taking away from you and me. When the reality is most of them are hard working, and appreciate this country more then many born here. Most pay taxes and contribute to our society and do the hard jobs many of us think we are too good to do.

Then they went after the homeowners who were attacked for simply having the dream of owning their own home. Who got into the only mortgages that were available to them, expecting like many do that property values would rise as they always have. But instead greed and lack of any regulation over wall street and the bankers caused a crash that changed all that. Those on wall street who were truly responsible for the crash got bonuses, the home owners were tossed into the street.

Now its public employees they are going after. I was disgusted yesterday as I listened to "hate radio" 610 WTVN and John Corby state ridiculous falsehoods, like that public employees make more then private on the average. Statements by him and others basically calling the people that teach our children, keep our streets safe, fight the fires, drive the snow plows so we can get to work, deadbeats, and freeloaders. All Ohio should be disgusted by the rights attack on our hard working neighbors, family members and friends whose livelihood is being threatened in the guise of budget cuts.

Who is next? The deadbeats that dare to send their kids to public schools that taxpayers pay for. How about those freeloaders that dare to take social security or medicare in their old age. How about the disabled, the mentally ill, students that dare to take low interest loans to pursue an education. Are they the next "dead beats" the repubLIEcans will go after?

Perhaps you are not poor, didnt lose your house, don't work as a teacher or a police officer. But you know people who do. You know they aren't wealthy, you know they are hard working. Yet you say nothing as this happens? What about when it is you they go after? Because clearly one way or another something you depend on, need, or expect will be in their sights sooner rather then later.

This is class warfare. This is redistrubution of wealth. It is the upper 1% taking and stealing from the rest of us. The rich get richer and the rest of us struggle just to maintain. The battle line right now is over SB5 and the rights of public workers. Yes it is your responsiblity to stand up for them, call your state representative or state Senator. The teachers, firefighters, police and state workers do need your support, as soon enough you will need theirs.Joe Rhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03601255278609648428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32231753.post-85122442179091188822011-02-20T08:46:00.003-05:002011-02-20T09:38:55.279-05:00A Government by the Rich and for the RichThat is the steady successful path RepubLIEcans are systematically leading our country down. Back in 2000 Karl Rove the leading repubLIEcan strategist spoke of a "permanent republican majority." They used control of elections and election machines and a systematic take over of the media by right wing activists like Rupert Murdoch and blind loyalty by religious groups that support a brand of republicanism that is anything but Christ-like in its attitudes to the poor, guns, capital punishment and health care.

But something happened they could not control. Not only have the demographics of the country changed racially, but Barack Obama got not only non whites to vote in record numbers but the youth who actually want to know the truth about issues sought it out and voted.

So for two years the right wallowed in pity and anger. How could their plans go so wrong. How could they lose control like this. But they regrouped and developed plans. They involved two major pillars, fear and destruction of the organizations of the left.

The fear of terrorism worked so well for them in the last decade, they used it to cause our country to attack a nation that didn't attack us for the first time in History. It lead to spending our country from a huge surplus into debt not just to pay for the military, but even more so to enrich defense contractors. Tasks like mess halls that were run by the military and staffed by soldiers in the past were now being outsourced to private Republican donor companies paying each man triple or more what soldiers were paid to do the same task.

But in 2000 it was clear the American people finally had enough of war, they needed a new fear. It became the deficit. Spending!!,,Bankruptcy!!,,Our grandchildren will have to pay!! All fear mongering lines we have heard again and again. When the reality is our deficit as a percent of GNP is not even close to the highest it has ever been. The reality is once the economy gets back into full growth once again, a great deal of the deficit will be reduced simply by more revenue created by more people working

But as it always is with RepubLIEcans facts rarely matter. They just use their Rupert Murdoch FauX news channel and Fall Street Journal to spill lie after lie. They get people out in the streets protesting taxes that in reality went down not up. So fear pillar one worked clearly in 2010.

So now what do the repubLIEcans do about 2012. The fact is if traditional minority groups vote in large percentages and fact based educated youth vote in large percentages, there is no way a RepubLIEcan can win the White House. So how do they prevent this? By destroying the organizing ability of the left. First it was ACORN. They used faked videos to do a false sting operation on a group that has since been proven to have done nothing illegal or improper in any way. Yet this very effective organizing group for the poor was regardless of its innocence destroyed.

Now comes the organizing the middle class voters,,Unions. It is clear the attack has begun. RepubLIEcans are using the deficit as the "fear" word in trying to abolish unions. How do workers having an organization that works for fair pay and fair benefits have anything to do with the deficit. Of course nothing. In most states like Wisconsin tax breaks for the rich caused the deficit, on a Federal level it was tax breaks for the rich and unpaid for wars. Yet somehow they have tried to convince American voters that its the middle class workers that are at fault.

It is No longer acceptable to put your head in the sand as the RepubLIEcans destroy our democracy to enrich their corporate donors. It is our nation and our future that is being destroyed step by step. Soon American will more resemble feudal society of medieval times with the Lords owning and controlling all the wealth and power while everyone else is at their mercy and whim.

The facts are out there, open your eyes and see them.Joe Rhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03601255278609648428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32231753.post-27106130118045117972010-12-02T14:41:00.003-05:002010-12-02T14:58:32.063-05:00More Republican Lies and HypocrisyRepresentative Mike Pence of Indiana gave a press conference today that was an incredibly vivid display of repubLIEcan dishonesty. He stood there bold face and called a bill voted on today to keep the tax breaks for 95% of Americans a tax increase. He then claimed that by not giving a continued tax break to the richest Americans, those making over $250,000 a year to be hurting small business and family farmers.

First of all how many family farmers do you know that make more than $250,000 a year, and any small business that makes more than that, that files taxes as an individual rather than a corporation has an idiot for an accountant. These tax breaks are NOT on corporate taxes but individual taxes. Have no doubt, the tax breaks the Republicans want added are for the richest of the rich period, not you not me.

The Republicans want to give a reward to the rich who filled their campaign coffers with unlimited donations in this last election period. This is not about creating jobs, and it surely does not help with the deficit, In fact adding the tax cut they want would add 700,000 million to the deficit.

Sure when it comes to helping the unemployed with extended benefits they scream about the national debt but to help the rich, apparently it’s no problem.

They keep repeating that the American people made it clear what they wanted in the last election. Really now did Americans vote to increase the national debt to give the richest Americans a tax break? Did they vote for more lies and hypocrisy? I don't think so.

Even a temporary give away to the rich for two years isn’t enough for Senator Jim Demint he wants this deficit killing measure to be made permanent.
Conservatives my ass.

Who do the repubLIEcan’s represent? Not you.Joe Rhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03601255278609648428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32231753.post-7258663364768660302010-11-11T10:32:00.003-05:002010-11-11T10:39:03.778-05:00Ohio in True PerilOnly 4 years have passed since the days of total RepubLIEcan rule in the State of Ohio. Yet Ohioans clearly forgot about the mess that created for our state. Indictments, convictions, election fraud, massive tuition increases at our state colleges and universities, million dollar rest areas, state funds stolen by a Republican operative while laundering money illegally to Republican campaigns. We even had a Governor that was convicted of illegally taking gifts and remained in office. Yes in 4 short years Ohioans clearly have forgotten the frustration, anger, embarrassment and damage RepubLIEcan rule did to our state because much to the disbelief of people that actually pay attention, the voters just put the Foxes in charge of the hen house once again.
Every state wide elected official is now a RepubLIEcan, The state house is totally under RepubLIEcan control, and even the state Supreme Court is entirely Republican. What were Ohioans thinking? Was it competence of the individual candidates? Clearly not.

We have replaced an experienced Governor who managed to balance the state’s budget in a horrible economic climate and unlike most states without raising taxes, cutting education, teachers, firefighters, police and other services citizens depend on our state for. He even froze tuition at the state colleges and universities. His replacement? A man who got rich working for THE Company whose greed, and lack of business ethics, led to a bankruptcy that was the very spark that triggered the recession. Caught in that mess was Ohio retirees who saw their pensions stolen by this company. This man who has already made it clear he plans to cut education, who doesn’t feel every school even needs a principal, is cutting jobs in manufacturing and construction by cancelling much needed state infrastructure improvements. This man will cost the jobs of many middle class workers in state offices, police, fire, education, yet he plans to develop a board of his rich donors and pay them unlimited unreported bonuses.
We went from a competent, effective State Treasurer who put in many developments to improve efficiency and cut costs, to a man who has no financial experience, who has been nothing but a professional politician his entire career, who the Federal election commission and every major newspaper in the state has called a liar.

Then there is the Secretary of State, where we had a very competent, experienced elections attorney in that office, which cleaned up the fraud and even the appearance of it in our elections. She is being replaced by a man who lied about his residence to stay in office as a State Senator, who is going to be running our elections even though he has publically stated that he “can’t break the law, he makes the law, he can change the law” Are you kidding me?

How bad can it get, how bad will it get? The problem is not only is there almost nothing that can be done about it, we won’t even know about it. Since every state official is beholden to the party apparatus, who is going to investigate things. Even the Supreme Court is part of the gang. Perhaps the media will call them out? Who? The clearly RepubLIEcan supporting Dispatch Media group and the Wolfe family? Not a chance. WSYX and Fox 28 owned by RepubLIEcan ultra Conservative Sinclair Media group?
If we are lucky the Plain Dealer will get the word out, but don’t count on it.

Yes Ohio your memory is short, you did not take the responsibility of voting seriously by getting the facts about who these men are. So when your kid can’t afford college, when your property taxes go up to just maintain the basics at your local school. When you have to pay outrageous fees for state services, when state parks decline, roads deteriorate. While your medical costs go up to pay for all those that are losing their Medicaid to get basic health services at the Emergency rooms, while your local taxes go up to replace all the cuts in state funding just to maintain fire and police departments. Meanwhile under the guise of “privatization” you see the rich donors get massive state contracts and get richer and richer. Remember how you voted November 2nd and thus who to blame.Joe Rhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03601255278609648428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32231753.post-80873601105895819862010-11-03T05:24:00.002-04:002010-11-03T05:37:50.076-04:00Fact Free ElectionFormer President Bill Clinton said it all the other day when he said this has been the most fact free election he had ever seen. Once again, sound bites, misinformation, lies and unlimited spending by corporations won the day

But just how much damage will be done by this election.

In Ohio a great deal. Expect college tuitions to once again skyrocket, expect the loss of police, firefighters, and teachers. Expect property taxes to rise, schools to close, the quality of education overall reduced. Expect roads to deteriorate. Expect elections in Ohio to once again be manipulated, through massive gerrymandering of districts to assure Republicans have an advantage in the State House and Congress for the next decade. Expect state funds to go to private companies to enrich the big donors of the Republicans under the guise of privatization and charter schools. Yes Ohio you turned the keys over once again to those that have burnt you again and again. Good job.

It never amazes me how people continue to vote against their own interests and line the pockets of the rich. They don't take the time to really listen and find out what is actually going on, what is actually being said, listening for substance not empty sound bites. Not calling out people who lie to them again and again.

The only bright side is that Ohioans once again after the damage is deep they will swing back and elect Democrats to fix the messes and corruption that is inevitably brought in by Republicans. Its a shame we have to go through this cycle over and over.Joe Rhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03601255278609648428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32231753.post-15228529459504850212010-10-31T08:38:00.003-04:002010-10-31T09:00:18.195-04:00Truly DisgustedI have been so disgusted by what I am seeing out there in this election it has been hard for me to write on this blog. To go from such hope and clarity 2 years ago to once again watch the American voter being successfully manipulated with lies, sound bites, and billions of dollars from corporations foreign and domestic and the most disgusting person of all an Australian billionaire Rupert Murdoch who uses a television network to spread the misinformation calling it news while dumping millions into political campaigns.

When the Supreme Court allowed Corporations to spend unlimited money I wrote then that perhaps it was the end of our Democracy. When the RepubLIEcans prevented a law requiring transparency behind who donates to campaigns they drove the nail in the coffin.

Just look what is happening today. Candidates that range from completely ignorant to extreme to plain nuts were nominated by the Republican Party and some will be elected to be United States Congressmen and Senators. How the great leaders of our history will turn over in their graves when they see some of these stand in the well and spout their total uninformed ignorance and do the damage to our nation they will clearly do.

But lets look at the supposed "main stream" candidates just in Ohio. A man who was the Budget Director of the Bush Administration, Rob Portman was personally responsible for turning our Federal Budget from a surplus to a deficit, is about to be elected on a platform of cutting spending.

John Kasich a man who made millions in bonuses working for a Wall Street Firm that was THE firm that failed which was the first shot that lead our country on the slide almost into depression is very possibly going to be elected Governor. He has not even hidden his desire to give the wealth back to these people in bonuses that would not be limited and actually turn the keys of Ohio Government over to such men.

Then there is Josh Mandel who has ran deceptive false adds that border on racism, who every newspaper in the state has called out for doing so, may actually win election over a very capable proven State Treasurer.

Then there is John Husted a man who says, he is the law, he can change the law anytime he wants, may actually be elected Secretary of State, who will control our elections. Remember the fraud the embarrassment the clear stealing of our elections by Ken Blackwell the last such criminal to hold that office?

With their money and conduits like Fox News these people have convinced to many Americans that competence, intelligence and leadership is a bad thing and should be replaced with buffoons who repeat the same sound bites "lower taxes, failed stimulus, and jobs."

The reality is, the stimulus did not fail, it prevented depression it kept the auto industry alive, how much a disaster would that have been, and when it comes to taxes that very same stimulus not only gave each and every American a tax cut federally it prevented states and localities from having to raise their taxes as much. And then there is jobs, under these Republicans we were losing 700,000 jobs a month for a total of 8 million lost. That slide has been abated and slowly but surely jobs are once again growing. They destroyed the economy it cannot be restored over night and it surely will never be if our economy is once again turned over to the greed and self preserving fat cats and special interests of the Republican Party.

So when you go the the voting booth, think very seriously before you vote for each office, your vote does matter and with that vote think about what you are doing to your country.Joe Rhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03601255278609648428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32231753.post-2052231961049011342010-07-23T11:38:00.004-04:002010-07-23T12:06:02.639-04:00A Great Week for AmericaThanks to President Obama and the Democrats in Congress this has been a great week for our country, despite Republicans and the Right. After years of the utter destruction of all regulations that protect Americans and our Economy from reckless banking and investment practices leading to a near depression, the President and the Democrats in Congress passed sweeping financial reform regulation to actually solve the problems.

While millions of Americans remain unemployed from the Bush recession, Democrats passed and the President signed a bill restoring unemployment benefits. This not only helps the unemployed but immediately puts more money actively into the economy to continue the Obama recovery.

Also last weekend the oil gushing into the gulf that was caused by lack of any enforcement of regulation during the Big Oil Presidency of the last 8 years, was with the oversight of the President's Man Admiral Than Allen finally brought to a stop.

Meanwhile what have the Republicans and the right been doing? They have clearly with malice and forethought attempted to block any legislation that will help our economy and prevent future economic disasters. Why? Because the worse the economy stays by November, the more votes they think they will get.

They have blocked helping millions of American families keep their unemployment benefits, while making statements blaming these middle class families for their own fate, calling them lazy, dead beats and worse. They claim they only wanted to pay for these benefits, yet they never said a word when they gave tax breaks to the rich that weren't paid for a big part of what lead us into the deficit slide.

In addition they criticized the President's Moratorium on deep water oil drilling as "job killing." Yet clearly the job's killed by the clearly unsafe, unprepared practices of the oil companies in this one incident have killed thousands of jobs not to mention the environment of the area. The Obama Administration has as its responsibility to protect America. Any thing less then attempting to prevent another similar disaster would be negligence.

So yes a very successful week for America, Democrats and President Obama. A week which reminds people why they voted for them. Competence, action, hope, and change. How has the right wing attempted to distract from such success. By trying to divide the country by race baiting, creating white fear, and fanning fires of racism.

Never has it been so clear, who is for action, solutions and change, and who is for greed, political games, and dividing America.Joe Rhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03601255278609648428noreply@blogger.com0
